I am running a Crystal Enterprise report web site, which
uses ActiveX as one of the options for the Crystal Report
viewer. Until the last patch on the IIS server, running
on Windows 2000 Server, you would only have to download
and install the ActiveX objects from Crystal Decisions
once, until they were updated or changed.

Now, everytime I run one of the reports I am prompted to
download and install the Crystal ActiveX objects, even
though they were previously downloaded and installed
successfully. To troubleshoot, I deleted the Crystal
ActiveX objects from the client desktop from within IE6.0.

I re-ran a report and was again prompted to download and
install the controls, which I expected to see. The
objects installed, and I could see the objects from with
IE tools, but am still being prompted to download and
install the objects.

Have any of the recent IIS or IE patches changed some
default behavior so that ActiveX controls are downloaded
fresh everytime they are required??

Try a simple test.

tools>internet options>security>click trusted zone and custom.

Type or cut and past the site name in the text box and apply the change. For
example microsoft.com should then trust anything from microsoft.

If this works it's because of your activex settings in the internet zone
have some or all "ActiveX" settings set to "Prompt" and while you could
change these settings it's unsafe in some places that way so if you can do
so then the trusted zone is the better option.

If you are designing the website you might consider telling your users to
use the trusted zone because that's more secure than telling them to change
the internet zone settings where unsigned ActiveX can be a bad thing.
