I recently upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista and I have a i730 pda
smartphone from Verizon. In the past, I could place my pda in its cradle
which was connected to my pc and it automatically synced my calendar events,
tasks, contacta etc.

On my pda, I currently have windows mobile 2003 2nd edition version. I
really don't know what to do as it relates to syncing my pda to windows mail.
Do I upgrade activesync or use the window media center that comes with my
windows vista? Again, I only use it for updated my calendar and contacts.

On another note, I still receive my emails with no problem; my pda retrieve
them every 7 mins. Please advise.

You need to install this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

However, be aware that (like always, even with the old Active Sync), that
you will only be able to sync with Outlook (from MS Office--preferably
version 2003 or newer), not Windows Mail (aka the new Outlook Express).

Thanks Max. However, I'm a little confused; I don't have Outlook on this new
laptop...I am using Windows Vista Home Ed. and have Windows Mail for my email
retrieval, calendar events and contacts because it took the place of Outlook.

How can I sync my pda to this new windows mail so that anything that I enter
in windows mail, e.g., contacts tasks, meetings on my calendar are
transferred to and from my mobile device?

Windows Mail did not replace Outlook, it replaced Outlook Express.
Outlook is still required to sync with a PDA, as it always has been.
You must have had, and been using, Microsoft Outlook on your previous
Windows installation (many times a version of Outlook came bundled with a
PDA on the same setup CD that contained Active Sync, since it was required
for Active Sync to function in that capacity).

You can't. Just as you could not with Outlook Express under previous Windows
versions.

Ok. You've shaded light on my question abd yes, my pda from verizon did come
with activesync software to download for Windows XP (that was on my old
laptop).

So are you saying that I will not be able to sync my pda smartphone with
this new windows mail....even if trying to use the windows media center? If
I upgrade to the new 4.5 activesync, windows mail (vista) doesn't support it,
right?

Somehow, I am failing to explain the distinction to you correctly.
Active Sync worked on XP (and other previous Windows versions) to sync with
Microsoft Outlook and a supported PDA.
Active Sync (any version) will not install or run on Vista--*it* has been
replaced with Windows Mobile Device Center.
Once WMDC is correctly installed on Vista, it will sync with Microsoft
Outlook and a supported PDA.
Windows Mail (as Outlook Express did not in previous Windows versions) will
not sync with anything, using anything.

All this boils down to the fact that you *must* install and use a version of
Microsoft Outlook suitable for Vista if you want to use WMDC to sync
contacts/mail/calendar/etc with a PDA.

I hope I was better at explaining it this time.

I have a problem with that. I installed Office 2000 with everthing and WMDC
and I have a brand new HP iPAQ hx2790. WMDC can see the iPAQ allrigt but it
keeps telling me, that outlook is not installed? I'm running Vista64. Any
idea?

Outlook 2000 might be too old. But you're better off asking this question
in an Office/Outlook support forum.
