active window flashes inactive then active

I have a problem with my active window flasing inactive for only a few
seconds and then flashing back to active. I notice it most when
typing in IE or in Word, when the window goes inactive and I lose my
cursor. I noticed in the processes list that internet explorer shows
up but can't seem to figure out why it's doing this. any help will be
appreciated. Thanks.
