active icons don't show in taskbar

Lately the only icons that will show up in the right hand side of the taskbar is Norton and the clock. The icons for internet connection, safely remove hardware etc. do not show. I have gone in to customize and made sure that the views such as hide when in-active etc. are properly checked. I have also made sure that it is checked in the dial-up properties and have re-installed my modem. Could this be some sort of virus that norton has not picked up? Any suggestions...
