We are currently undertaking a project to move roaming profile folders
for our students from an old server to a new server.
To do so, we need to select only students from AD, then change the
profile location for the entire group.
In an attempt to do so, we run the Active Directory Users and
Computers tool from a Windows XP machine, then try to filter on users
who are members of "students" to see just this subset of users. To do
so, we used the Advanced feature and specified an LDAP query to
achieve the desired result.
No joy. With filter applied, no users show up.
Move to an adjacent Windows 2003 server and use the AD Users and
Computers tool. Specify the same filter using the same LDAP query -
works exactly as it should - displays only users who are members of
group "students".
While as an operational matter, we can clearly do what we wish from
the Windows 2003 server, I would like to be able to do this
administration from my XP workstation. I would also like to better
understand the process, as I wasted a fair amount of time yesterday
assuming that the query had been misspecified on the XP computer or
that I was understanding the filtering process correctly.
Also, it appears when I try to apply a filter on the Windows 2003
server, when I select USERS, the list of options contains more items
to select from than when I do the same thing from the same tool on the
Windows XP workstation.
Can anyone provide any insight?
