A resource says that WINS only needed if Active Directory is not used.
How do I find out whether Active Directory is used or not on my system?

If you are in a domain, AD is being used.

Thanks, Rob

1. Is Active Directory running on a client computer?
2. I have a computer on a Workgroup - does this mean that Active Directory
is not used on it?

Have you installed a Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 Server? If so have you run
DCPromo? If so you have Active Directory. if not, you do not.

Wins is needed if you want to browse across subnets.

I have w2k pro sp4 - does this mean that I do not have Active Directory?

So in my peer-to-peer network
w2k-router-w2k I do not need Active Directory or WINS and can leave WINS
address empty in the TCP/IP settings?
I understand that a computer will obtain the other NETBios names in the LAN
either from lmhosts or by sending relevant requsets?

You do not have AD. Believe me you would know if you had Active Directory.
You also need Windows2000 Server Products for a Domain. You can leave WINS
empty as you do not have WINS server. Are you actually having any problems?

Yes, Scott,
I have problems.
I keep having errors like "network name is no longer available" or
"unexpected network error" or "printer is not
accessable" or "The DHCP allocator has disabled itself."
I have been floating these problems here for a month now and onbody seem to
be able to help. So I started exploring every bit of my settings

I did it many times, but another attempt will not hurt.
I'll do it right now
