Activation kills keyboard/mouse

I just replaced a CDROM drive and that was apparently the last straw -
XP decided it needed to be re-activated. It brings up a message saying
that I have 3 days grace and offers options to Register Now (or
later). Unfortunately there is now no mouse or keyboard. Rebooting to
safe mode brings up the Login screen but again there is no mouse or
keyboard. I know they work (I can boot to a Live CD fine).
