Activate first, and make sure you image to an external hard drive. I like
Acronis True Image version 10 for imaging.

Hi, I need to do a completer reinstall of XP. After I get everything fine
tuned I would like to create an image of it on another hard drive so I have
a backup of a new install. Would I activate XP before making the image or
after? Or can I even do it at all? Thanks for any help. Michael

Thanks. Can I use an IDE drive in a drive enclosure so I can just plug it in
and go when I need it. Problably a stupid question, but I'm a little
confused.

I'd activate XP before making the image/backup. Some apps. here for
such:

Michael:
Just to be clear about this...

When you say you would want to "use an IDE drive in a drive enclosure so I
can just plug it in and go when I need it", understand that if by a "drive
enclosure" you're referring to a USB or Firewire external HDD that would
contain the disk image that was created by Acronis or some similar disk
imaging program - that device, i.e., the "drive enclosure", is *not* a
bootable device. Should that "drive enclosure" contain a disk image
(basically one or more files), you would need to effect a restore/recovery
process in order to create a bootable functional internal HDD. You can do
that, of course, with Acronis or other disk imaging program but I wasn't
sure whether you understood that.

Now there's another thing to consider re using a disk imaging program such
as the Acronis one that Rock mentions. This type of program also have the
facility of "cloning" the contents of your internal day-to-day working HDD
to another HDD so that the "destination" HDD (perhaps your "drive
enclosure") is a copy of your "source" HDD. Once again, if the "drive
enclosure" that you've referred to is a USB or Firewire external HDD, it
will not be bootable in an XP environment but should restoration of the
system be later necessary you could "clone back" the contents of the
external HDD to an internal HDD.

Note that either the disk imaging or disk cloning process for backup
purposes is relatively straightforward and shouldn't pose any problems. The
same is true for the recovery/restoration process whether you're using the
disk imaging or disk cloning process.

You're welcome, and see Anna's post for more info. An image is not
bootable, it has to be restored by the program that created it. If what you
want is a bootable image you have to clone the disk which you can do to an
external drive but it won't be bootable from the external drive. Since it's
IDE, that drive, if a clone, would need to be taken out and installed as an
internal drive to boot from it.
