I am experimenting with virtualizing Windows from a few laptops that
have been used for some years. To this end I am using VMWare Convert
in order to create a virtual copy of the physical laptop. This works
fine as far as the copy and reconfiguration of hardware goes, but
because of the big change in hardware seen by XP-Pro activation is
required. And I get into a loop here because I did not set the copy up
with Internet network connection...
Activation is no big deal in itself, but I would like to know *how* it
can be done in order to keep the original laptop running? Or even by
killing off the old laptop...
The deal is that I want to replace whatever codes Windows uses to
define the installation so I can enter a new registration key. And
here I would like to use my MSDN key for XP-Pro, on which I have
plenty of activations left.
Will this work or do I need to do some special things on the laptop
first (such as sysprep or similar)???
If this works then we will give the people using the laptops (software
developers) a virtual copy of their old laptop when they move on to
new laptops. And this is in order that they can quickly be productive
again after the switch to new hardware. Normally hardware switching
means installation of zillions of development tools and stuff that may
take weeks to complete...
