Activated Works, lost mouse

I have an Acer netbook, which uses a trackpad. Sometimes I plug in USB mouse
from Vakoss. Until yesterday, everything worked as expected; I could even
use the mouse and the trackpad alternately.

I activated an OEM version of MS Works 8.5, and the next time I booted the
computer, the trackpad does not respond to anything. I plugged in the
external mouse, and it behaved oddly -- the cursor jiggled, moved slowly and
jerkily (it took six or so "swipes" just to move the mouse across the
screen). I tried enabling and disabling the two mouse options using Control
Panel, and ran the troubleshooter which insists there is no problem.

It didn't occur to me to run "system restore" before I validated the Works
program, and my most recent SysRestore was sometime in January.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Aha! A safe-mode restart solved the problem. -- Rachel Holmen
