I have not done a thing to my computer hardware for a long time.
Starting today it had to be activated every time I turned it on. Which was
three times.
Why is it doing this now? It's genuine copy of XP, I have the original CD.

Try this:
Click Start | Run
Type in regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll click ok
Type in regsvr32.exe licdll.dll click ok
