Go to www.adobe.com and download the free Adobe Acrobat
Viewer, it will work alone to open PDF files and as a
plug-in to Internet Explorer. But any file can be
downloaded to your computer with the "save target as"
command on the right click on the link.

Not the image viewer but the PDF viewer known as Acrobat Reader.

If you have downloaded and installed the free acrobat reader

http://www.adobe.com/products/acroba...dlm=1&x=15&y=4

(short link version: http://tinyurl.com/359g7)

And you still cannot "open" PDF files, you should do the following:

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to about
80-120MB..
- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
something between 80MB and 120MB. (Betting it is MUCH larger right now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
(the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10 minutes
or more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
Explorer.

Now try.

If you are trying to download and save "academic journals"
you may need special passwords or server rights to download
or save the files to your local hard drive. Some of these
academic services such as J-Stor are very difficult to use,
you have to connect through a college server very often.

Try opening Acrobat on its own.
You'll have to agree to its usage terms before you use it.

Often times, many won't do this, and then try opening pdf's from the
Internet
The usage terms dialog gets hidden away, and it appears as though it isn't
working, even though it is waiting for your prompt.
