For some reason when I open acrobat.exe it just hangs there and won't open.

Have you tried reinstalling it?

Download the same version from internet and run re-install/Repair. Just enter
the registration key from the previous install (If it asks)

How did you get it installed originally, and do you have the paperwork
maybe you can get a deal on an upgrade from Adobe.
