Have I turned on an automatic acknowledgement facility? Whenever I recieve a
message from people I know ask for an acknowledgement, OUTLOOK appears to
generate an outgoing message which cannot be sent from the server I am
currently using.
OUTLOOK is trying to send these messages, but cannot. Also, I cannot find
these messages to delete them!!

Thanks, but what happens if I click "hide this message?"
Also, how can I find the messages OL is trying to send? They do not appear
in the OUTBOX

This is a sign that Outlook is trying to send the receipt from an account
that can't send. Do you have more than one account defined? Why not simply
disable the honoring or receipt requests altogether?

I can't say because you've not given your Outlook version. However, see if
you can click Tools>Options>E-mail Options>Tracking Options
