Achive Problems

I have been having the following problem archiving files.

When I archive my outlook files, the active pst file will shrink by about
200 MB, but it creates an archive file in excess of 2GB. This has happened
the last 3 times that I have archived. The last 2 times, I created new
archive files that were empty.

Any ideas or solutions to fix this problem
