acessing the network slows down my computer

i've got my laptop connected wirelessly to my friends
network. the problem is when i try to access shared
folders on the network. My system slows down to the
point i cant do anything with it. it just seems to take
up nearly all the system rescourses.

anyone know how to solve this problem?
