I just received an Acer net-notebook (Aspire 100) and also a Targus external
DVD/CD slim drive.
I attached the Targus and put in a DVD (movie) and it said do you want to
play in Microsoft Media, and I clicked YES.
They I got a message:
Windows Media Playern (9) cannot play this DVD because a compatible decoder
is not installed on your computer.
Is that something that should have been installed, or is it something I must
install. Or should I have a separate DVD player installed (or to be installed
by me)?
I am just very confused at this time because my grandson can't see his movie.
Any help would be appreciiated.

Check if Windows Media Player is configured to download codecs automatically:
On the Tools menu, click Options, click the Player tab, and then click on the
"Download codecs automatically" check box to check it. For quick results
under "Check for updates:" tick the radio button "Once a day". Wait till it
updates.
You ca also download here:
Codec Installation Package
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...n#Requirements

If it still it won't play, you may have to upgrade to WMP 11.

What it means is that you need DVD decoder software such as CinePlayer,
WinDVD, etc. It probably was not included with the netbook; you'll need to
purchase it separately. I'm a little surprised that it didn't come with the
Targus. The DVD player software such as WinDVD allows you to play the movie
through it's own software. The plug-in (decoder) allows the movie to play
through Windows Media Player. This was the one I got, and it works well for
me:

I don't know the "Aspire 100" (I think you mean "Aspire One ... 100"),
but your Aspire netbook probably has WinDVD like all XP-based Aspire
One's have. Just check under (start ->) All Programs.

I don't see WinDVD listed as being included with these:

Maybe Worst Buy throws it in as a added surprise

Is this a righteous DVD?

I recall hearing this message appear in an attempt by some malware to
download a trogan.

Are we talking marketing or reality? :-)

But seriously, the Acer Aspire One *series* has tons of different
models/configurations. The one :-) I have is not even listed, probably
because it's stone old, i.e. a couple of months! :-) Mine is the
AOA150-Bw, 8.9" screen, 1GB memory, 120GB hard-disk, XP Home. *That*
model *does* have WinDVD, honestly!

BTW, supplying WinDVD is somewhat silly, because - mainly due to the
small size of the netbook - it does/can not have a (built-in) DVD drive.
And if you buy an external one, the software might as well come with
*that*.

I.e. my camera software came with ... duh ... my *camera*. My TV
tuner software came with my TV tuner. My mobile phone software came with
my mobile phone. My ... you get the picture! :-)

Yeah, that's what I was saying in my earlier reply, that I was surprised
some kind of DVD program didn't come with the Targus. I would more expect it
to come with the drive than to come with a netbook without a drive. I see
your point entirely. Things that make you go huh!
