be worried?

Could be - most power supplies get warm.

However - it is new and the power supply has nothing at all to do with
Windows XP - so asking in 'Windows XP Help and Support' is probably not the
best place to start.

I recommend contacting those you purchased the laptop from and/or Acer
directly.

I have an Aspire 5100. The power supply gets quite warm but not hot enough
that I can't hold my hand on it. I recommend you exchange it if possible.

Laptop power supplies do tend to get extremely warm. Check with Acer
to see if there is a recall or replacement. If not, and you use it on
your lap, look at getting a protective pad where your place it under
the laptop.

Hmmmm.. Well...

Hardware issue/question on a brand new device you just bought:
- Those you bought it from (I assume it's under warranty...)
- Those who manufactured it (They'd probably know about such things...)
- Hardware forums/newsgroups (even those provided by the hardware
manufacturer...)
http://global.acer.com/support/index.htm

Asking for help in an Operating System (software) Help and Support forum
probably wouldn't have even been on my list - much less a starting place -
for a hardware issue such as a power supply getting hot. ;-) Physical
(hardware) problems rarely have software solutions.

perhaps, you might want
to contact acer again and
have them issue a rma and
send the product back to
them and at their expense
or you will file a complaint
with the bbb online.

in the interim, i would proceed
with filing a complaint with
the bbb anyways so that they
can keep a record of these
kind of consumer issues.

if and when acer does resolve
your issue, then provide a
followup to the bbb so that
they can close the issue on
your say so, and not acer's.
