I installed Explorer 7 and hated it. I tried to uninstall it today and
instead ended up deleting the normal desktop exploreer and "My Computer" so
now I have no way to locate files.

I can't find my original disk that came with my computer years ago. I am
running Windows XP and thought I could just reinstall from the Add/delete
screen, but it isn't there. How can I get this back?

Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Scroll on down to Internet
Explorer 7, highlight, press remove. If everything works right, it'll
be removed and IE 6 will return.

I already DID remove Explorer 7 and Explorer 6 works fine which is how I am
able to get to this web site.

My problem is that "MY COMPUTER" AND THE "DESKTOP EXPLORER" are both gone
now and I can't get them back. My Internet Explorer is just fine now. I did
get rid of 7 and replace it with 6. But I can't find my files on my desktop
now except by using Word or something.

To get those icons back, do the following:

right click the desktop
click on the desktop tab
click on the "customize desktop" button
click on the general tab
check or uncheck each item you wish to have on desktop
under "Desktop Icons" at the top half of the window.

Good Luck,

Another trick for getting to file explorer is to
right click on the "Start" button and left click on "Explore"

It isn't the ICONS that are gone, it is the PROGRAMS that are gone. I can
get the Icons by going to the start button and click them and nothing
happens. I never did have them on the desktop and have no need to have them
on the desktop now. I just want the Programs to work when I click on them.
I watched the computer delete the explorer program and thought it was
deleting the Internet Explorer, but then found the Internet Explorer 7 was
still there and my desktop Explorer (the one that finds files on your own
computer, not on the Internet) was gone, (you know, right click on start and
then click explorer). Anyway, that one is gone. Then I deleted Internet
Explorer 7 and got back Internet Explorer 6.

But, I still can't explore my own desktop to find my own files.

To test if the programs are *Really* gone....do the following:

Ctrl+Alt+Del
Click the Task Manager Button
Click File | New Task (Run)
In the "Open" field ...type explorer | Click OK
Another way is to try Start | Run | explorer | OK
If the application opens...then the program is NOT missing.

If it is....You might want to try a restore point *Previous* to the
installation of IE7

If those tips don't work, you may want to try a Repair Install of XP.

The file explorer.exe usually resides in c:\Windows. You might find
another copy in a subfolder of c:\Windows. If all else fails, borrow
a WinXP CD from a friend and make a copy. Running your PC
without this CD is not really viable.

Download IE6 from the Microsoft download site, then re-install it.

Thanks, Guys,

I got it. I finally decided to go back to microsoft.com and install the
butterfly explorer. I really didn't want it but thought maybe it would work.
I now have my explore back as a working program on my start menu. I think
it has some of the same components that got deleted earlier.

(First I tried to install it from my add menu but it crased due to a missing
file called auupdate.exe. Then I just went to the website and installed the
whole thing.)

Thanks for all your help. I think I am all set now.
