Quick story: My old hd wouldn't boot windows (unmountable_boot error) so I
purchased a new hd and have it up and running. I stuck my old, unbootable hd
back in so I could copy any important files over.

My problem is that, on the old hd, I had set up different users and the one
I want to access was password protected. When I try to go into the MY
DOCUMENTS folder, it tells me that access is denied. I know the password but
how I do use it to access the folder?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Ha! Spoke too soon.

Okay, on my new set-up, there is only the one USER so it has admin rights.
When I right click on the old MY DOCUMENTS and click on PROPERTIES, I do not
see the security tab.

Again, help is much appreciated!

To see the security tab in XP Home, you must be in Safe Mode and the
file system (on the booting Windows installation) must be NTFS. If you
still can't take ownership, get your old data with Knoppix or a Bart's
PE.

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.
