I am trying to save data (and programs) on a Maxtor hard
drive; windows doesn't boot on the old drive, so I have
installed a new one which formatted properly and is
running windowsxp properly. windows doesn't want to read
the old drive as there are some corrupt files on it. the
error message i get is :nake sure there are file system
drivers.

CHKDSK doesn't work; it throws me out. i was able to
access the disk with windows 98. i thought i could copy
stuff off, but no luck.

any advice?

Does the post see the drive? Did you set the BIOS to look for that
drive (i.e first slave or second slave or master). Did you change the
jumper on the drive properly (i.e set to slave or mater or mater with
slave depending on where it is iun the IDE. What file system is on the
old drive??

since i posted - and after reading some other posts i
have reinstalled windowsxp with fat32 since the maxblast
said it couldn't copy from a FAT32 to a NTFS. i can boot
up from the original DELL resource CD which boots to
windows98. the jumpers on the two drives are set to
cable. the software (windows) and maxblast read the
drive; windows98 reads the drive and lets me roam around
on it; however, when i tried to xcopy from one drive to
the other the error message is "bad or missing
xcopy32.mod". the new drive and operating system work
fine. i just want to move my stuff and reformat the old
drive.

It sounds like the old drive has something physically
wrong with it, like bad clusters. Try copying one file at
a time to the new drive, or using XCOPY on small
directories, not on the whole drive at once.

Also, since the old drive is now atahced to your PC, try
CHKDSK with the /R option on thre old drive. If it says
something about closing open handles, say yes or OK. If
is ask about rebooting, say yes or OK. Note that CHKDSK
with /R can be very slow, but it is alo very thorough. If
this way of running CHKDSK fails, then the disk is almost
certainly bad or failing. Save whatever data you can ASAP.

Finally, if a single bad spot seems to be stopping you
from recovering files, look into third-party file recovery
software. Some of that can copy from formatted disks,
slightly corrupt disks, etc.

Have you tried a program like Spinrite (www.grc.com) to see if it can
fix the errors on the disk? It may take some time but if the drive is
salvageable it should work.
