Although I am now using XP, I have every older disk drive I ever owned. I
want to retieve old documents and photos from 95 and 98 drives. I plug thm
into the desktop power and data cables but cant see them or else the xp
machine won't start. do I have to get an old 98 machine to access these
drives??

Thanks for the help.

Does the BIOS recognise the disks?

The old drives probably have their jumpers set to "master." I'm not
sure what happens if both drives on a single IDE cable are set to
master, but I wouldn't imagine that it would work very well.

If you are connecting one of the old disks to an IDE cable to which
another device (the main hard drive; a CD-ROM drive, etc.) is connected,
make sure that the jumpers of both devices are set correctly (either
master/slave or cable select).

I would rather install these old drives into an USB/Firewire external
hard drive box and access them in this way. Simpler as well as avoiding
any potential problems or issues concerning the present system, including
those already mentioned.

In theory, there should be no problem as long as your jumpers are set
perfectly.
