Setup a user account/password in your W98 machine that is
the same as the Windows Xp machine....

You need to be logging on to the 98 box with the same
username and password which is set up on the XP machine.

Error 31 when attempting to browse the XP machine
=====================================

This error occurs if you set up a user account on XP without a password,
and then attempt to log in using that username across the network.

By default, Windows XP doesn't permit remote users to connect
from the network without a password.

The correct fix is to assign a password to the user account on XP,
and then log onto the 98 box with that username and password.

Alternatively, to allow access using a user account without a password:

Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools |
Local Security Policy.
Expand Local Policies | Security options.
Double-click "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to
console login only",
which is enabled by default. Disable this option
