It's actually a "crossover" cable. To make this work, you have to manually
assign fixed IP addresses (like 192.168.1.100 for one, and 192.168.1.101 for
the other, netmask of 255.255.255.0) and the same workgroup.

You also have to actually share the files or folders you want access to.

For example,
http://www.computing.net/networking/...rum/24735.html

If you have both systems attached to a router, you don't need (and can't
use) the crossover cable, and the router will provide the IP addresses.

Once that's done, you can share files.

However, this *will* break any other networking done with the adapters you
set fixed IPs for. Make notes of any changes you made.

Use a Thumb drive?

The USB cable I have has drivers for W98 and XP machines. It also has
its own software to let you drag files from one machine to the other.
USB Link Cable, under $30.
