When trying to open a Word document attachment in Outlook Express, or
sometimes just double clicking on a desktop document, Access fires up and
unsuccessfully tries to open the file.

How do I correct that problem?
Thank you,
Karl

Find a Word document file with the same extension (note they are not all
DOC) then do a right click on the file, choose the "Open With" option and
choose MS Word. Hopefully that will take care of it.

Hi Joseph,
I've done that by saving the attachment, then going to "open with," and I
can get Word to open the file, but on another occasion, Access will still try
to open a word document, if not called within MS Word, itself. Do you know if
there's some default setting I'm supposed to change?

There is a registry entry that does this work, but I have given up
trying to hack the registry files long ago. I hope someone else can help
you with this one. I am not at all sure it is really a "Access" issue but
more of a "Windows" issue. You may want to try a Windows newsgroup in the
flavor of yours (XP etc.)

Karl:

As Joseph says, this probably is the wrong newsgroup, but the solution is
straightfoward. I'm not sure which version of Windows you have and,
therefore, whether the following will work for you. But in Windows XP,
you'd follow these steps:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. In Explorer, open the Tools menu and select Options.
3. In the Options dialog, click the File Types tab (at the top).
4. Scroll down and select the row with DOC in the extensions column.
5. Click the Change button.
6. Select the program (Microsoft Word) you want to open files ending in
DOC.
7. Files ending in DOT should also be opened with Microsoft Word.

If you see an ellipsis (three dots like this ...) after an extension (in the
extensions column), then you need to make the Extensions column wider. Then
you will see the extensions in full. (You can make the column wider by
dragging the vertical bar on the right side of the column heading.)

Regards
Geoff
