Access to share folder

In the last two weeks I have been having a variety of problems with my
Shared Documents folder on my Win XP Home SP 2 computer. For several files
from February in the folder I received "Access Denied" error msgs even when
logged on as Administrator. Secondly, while the folder is visible on
another computer on my home network, I cannot open it or see any files
("xxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource...")

By referring to the MSKB (article 823306 and several others) I was able to
regain access to the files on the local computer by logging into Safe Mode
and "taking ownership" of the files. However, I still can't access the
folder (or any others I share) from my other networked computer. All the
boxes in the Sharing tab for the folder are correct.

I changed nothing in February; Zone Alarm has not been updated since
November; Windows Firewall is off; I have scanned for viruses and spyware; I
have tried to turn the Guest account on and off (another MSKB article),
given "ownership" of the folder to "Everyone" in Safe Mode (and propagating
the settings to objects in the container), but nothing works. I am back to
transferring files between my networked computers using a USB drive, which
is not intolerable, but when you have a network that works in all other
respects... oh well.

I would appreciate any advice. Greg

Not accessible indicates a network connectivity problem. Access denied is
usually the message you get when there are permission problems. Verify that
you can ping the computer with the share from your other computers by name
and IP address. You can use the command ipconfig /all to find the IP address
of a computer. If ping failes try booting the computer with the share into
Safe Mode with networking to see if that works but if you do not have an
internet router or firewall device be sure to disconnect any internet
conection before trying such. Use the command net share on the computer with
the share to see if the share and $IPC share are present. Use the command
netsh firewall to make sure it shows operational mode as disabled for the
Windows Firewall. --- Steve
