Access problems - (d/base on 2003 Server)

Problems running access databases which reside on 2003 Server machine.

1) If a database is already open by another user the application will not
run. Get no error messages either. How can we access already open databases?

2) If a database can be opened an 'open file security warning' window
appears from which we can access the database. How can we disable this window?

We only have this problem on our one and only XP client.
All other WIN 2000 clients do not have this problem.
