Your best bet is to post your question in a Win98 newsgroup.
This one looks at Windows 2000 issues.

A good source might be Duncan's book on DOS calls.

I do not believe you can access the file allocation table without writing a
driver/code

Please let us know what you are trying to do and why you think you need to
access the file allocation table

thanks,
Edwin.

I think you can access any part of the hard disk under DOS,
including the FAT. Remember the DOS Norton Utilities?
They did it routinely. You can even do it with debug.exe!

actually... now you mention it, Norton... ah the memories !

still, like to know what the original poster (Monty) wants to do...
(and yes... you are right a W98 group would be more appropriate)

Monty,

there are many freeware and shareware "unerasers" available,
I suggest you google for this.

If you have an opportunity to test these utilities on a (different) W98
machine prior to using it on the machine you are trying to recover, that
would be highly recommended....

good luck,
Edwin.
