I can't access a directory, a user directory. My Windows XP Home went
belly-up, and trying to get important files, but all my attempts failed. It
also reports that there are no bytes in that directory but there is... trust
me there is. Anybody have any ideas how I can retrieve those files?

See if this helps..

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP Pro
you have to disable simple file sharing.

You need to take ownership of the folders and files, to start with.
