"Access is Denied" msg when opening a folder on a firewire HD

A short while ago, I had a problem with a firewire cable
that caused my external HD to crash.

After recovering the data, I am unable to open several
folders on the drive. I get the error message: "Access
is denied."

Explorer says the folders are empty, but when recovery
software is used, the contents of the folder are visible
and can be moved to a safe directory.

My problem is that I am unable to move all of the data
off of the external HD because of its size (120Gb), and I
am unable to delete the folders from the firewire HD
because of the access issue.

The MS Knowledge Base mentions booting in safe mode and
logging in as an administrator to change the security
settings on the folders.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;823306

This sounds like it may be able to give me access to the
folders in question, however, booting in safe mode will
not allow the drivers for the firewire adaptor to load.
Is it possible for me to either log in as the admin
without going into safe mode, or loading the driver for
the firewire HD in safe mode?

Thanks for your help.

Ummm... that doesn't help.

At the bottom of my message I mentioned "This sounds like
it may be able to give me access to the
folders in question, however, booting in safe mode will
not allow the drivers for the firewire adaptor to load.
Is it possible for me to either log in as the admin
without going into safe mode, or loading the driver for
the firewire HD in safe mode?"

I can't even use the HD in safe mode because the driver
for the IEEE-1394 adaptor doesn't load.

sooo... what about this?

==== FROM http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm ====

Administrator Account - Add to the Welcome Screen

Download the INF fix here. To use: Download the
xp_admin_enable.inf file (you may want to right click and
use Save Target As). Locate the file you downloaded and
right click on it, then select Install. Or Download the
VBS Fix here. To use: Download the xp_admin_enable.vbs
file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to
right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the
xp_admin_enable.vbs file. You will be prompted when the
script is done. INF and VBS files can be viewed in
Notepad.

========================

Will this help by allowing me to use the administrator
account without having to go into safe mode?

ummm.. please read my post again.

The folder in question is on an external firewire
device. When you start in safe mode, XP won't load the
firewire drivers. See my problem?
