In order to install an application I am required to make changes using
msconfig. Although I always logon with Administrator rights I get a message
that an "Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service." I need to configure start up under Selective Start. Can someone
please tell me what is going on?

This is *always* caused by poor third-party software that you've installed.
The most common culprits are ZoneAlarm, McAfee and HP driver software. In
most cases, the changes take place anyway despite of that message.

I tried closing down everything with EnditAll and shut down firewall and AV
SW. Even then msconfig would only allow Diagnostic Startup. The application
I want to use will not install it seems unless I abide by the readme file
recommendations. Tech support says I need to consult Microsoft LOL like I
would actually get them to respond. I have searched Google and found
countless fixes advertised for a fee. I have seen posts that say I must
empty the prefetch folder and others that warn against this. I wonder if
installing in Safe mode would be an alternative.

There is no need to shut down the built-in Firewall. If you've installed
any third-party firewall, remove that crap. Good luck.

Well the debate about firewalls is a totally different topic. I have 12
systems that all use Zone Alarm Pro and have never had one problem in many
years with it. The features far surpass that Microsoft "crap" as you put it
and have not only blocked inward but out bound connections something that
Microsoft does not do. I have removed ZA Pro temporarily many times and have
solved nothing by doing it. How do you know when an application is phoning
home without a third party firewall application? What settings in the built
in firewall application do you use for that protection? Windows Security
Center recognizes ZoneAlarm and has no warnings what-so-ever against it's
use.
