Thanks to some misguided techies from Symantec I could no longer start
Windows. IO could recover the original settings with my old files saved in a
separate folder. All of the subfolders are accessible except the one that
has all my old personal settings and documents.. Access is denied to that
one. Can anyone help?

Access is Denied Error Message:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881

Shared folder access:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sdperms.htm

Also read this MS KB article about how to take ownership of files.

There is also a utility named: Unlocker
I have not used it but it has been mentioned a number of times.
