I backed up some files on to my external USB harddrive.

I then re-installed winXP on my laptop, now I can't access the files I
backedup on my USB harddrive.

I can see the USB harddrive in explorer and I can go into folders but I
cannot open any of the files up or copy them to my desktop.

I tried to changed the ownership of the files, but I get an error message
saying access denied.

I tried to use the subinACL util. but it doesn't work.

Can anyone help.. please!!!

Hi Peter,

From the root, did you add yourself, give yourself Full Control, then
drill down folder by folder to do the same thing? You may have to
remove prior ownership info after giving yourself full control.
Changing ownership won't work if you don't have more control than the
others.

But, I tried it already, it doesn't work.
I when to take ownership of the folder/files, it will just give me a message
saying access denied...

I tried to add my user to at the root and give it access, but it won't let me

SYSTEM, etc, and that they are removed down the tree. Also make sure
that your permissions are added to all folders, subfolders, and files.

It can be done. I removed dozens of folders today on three laptop
drives that were previously in laptops from my workstation. I removed
everything but the user data from them.

I removed the other owners starting at the parent level and working
down. You can't do it any other way. If you have full ownership, you
can remove the others.

The problem is, how do I get full ownership of the USB HDD??
Its called the "F" drive, on my machine, when I try to change any kind of
permission there it just gets denied...

Is there ways, I can give you a screen shot of the error messages I am seeing?

You have to go into the Advanced button settings on the Security tab and
make sure that everything below the parent inherits the ownership
(Replace permissions entries...) and on the Owner tab change owner and
check "Replace owner on ..."

Make sure you do this at the parent folder.

You could use a website to post a screenshot, like Imageshack or similar.
