access denied on external usb drive

hi

I recently had to re-install windows XP home edition on my home computer
due to a power failure which really messed it up. I managed to backup the
files I needed to keep to an external usb drive. However, now when I try to
restore them to my C drive
I get 'access denied' on the backed up folders and files.

Before I get loads of mails about following the advice given in:

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=308421

I've tried all of this and unfournately when I go into safe mode as
adiministrator
the security options are not available, i.e. I cannot add myself or change
any setteings for the usb folders and files. I've seen some mention of
changing security policies but don't know how to do this.

Anyone know how to fix this problem.

Cheers

Kevin

Access is Denied Error Message XP Pro: (should work with Media Center)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881

Shared folder access:

Understanding and Applying NTFS Permission in Windows XP Professional

There is also a utility named: Unlocker
I have not used it but it has been mentioned a number of times.
