Hello NG,

the hard disc of my notebook crashed an was replaced. I installed user
accounts with the same names and pahwords as before but cannot access
to an encrypted mass storage device and the data on it. Did I forget
something?

Thanks

Dirk

This is caused because the system has assigned a different security
descriptor to the new installation. So even though everything appears the
same, it actually isn't.

You'll have to take ownership of the files and folder in the Security
settings. In my experience this is often a bit "flakey" - so don't forget to
check all of the files. I spent many hours going back and forth from Safe
Mode until I learned this.

Here's a link about taking ownership:

Oops - almost forgot, there are separate issues if using the Encrypted File
System (EFS).

If the data was encrypted with EFS and you did not save a copy of the
encryption certificates there is a good chance the data is lost. There is a
possibility if you saved the old user profiles that the keys can be
extracted from there. Here is a program that can do that.
