Hope someone out there can help... Here is the situation... Running XP Media
Center Edition (what Dell sold). It is up to date with SP2 and all critical
updates (automatic updates are on). Have (had) 4 user accounts so everyone
could have their own favorites, Itunes, etc. Each account was an
"Administrator". Suddenly (last 4 days) none of the family's accounts work
properly. Symptoms:
- IE (7) would start but would never connect to any site (just sat there
with "Connecting..." in the tab)
- Could not run "some" programs (primarily McAfee Security Center). just a
quick "blip" and nothing, like if the program had never been selected.
Others, like Office (excel, word) run fine.
- Cannot access some folders using Windows Explorer (prime example
C:/Program Files). Get the message "C:/Prorgram Files is not Accessible
Access is Denied"
Funny part is my account works fine! Don't experience any of the above
problems.
What I've tried:
- Checked for any new critical MS updates (none)
- Backed-up folders for each account (My Documents, Desktop, Favorites,
Startup) to external drive
- Deleted each of the user accounts (including their files)
- De-fragged the drive
- Rebooted
- Updated McAfee Security Center and scanned computer (nothing found)
- Downloaded and ran MS Malicous Software Removal tool (nothing found)
- Re-created an account (again "Administrator" type)
- Switched to new account (did not restore files yet)
SAME PROBLEMS!
As my name states, I'm confused and a little dazed. Searched the communities
and support sites for similar circumstances but none seem to apply. Any help
would be greatly appreciated!
