While on vacation, someone was messing with my computer at work. Now when I
log in to my access program, it comes up with a window that says "the
database "db1" is read only, you cannot save changes... I went into tools
and I cannot figure out how to put myself back as the administrator with full
edit capabilities and another which was named "users" to view details. We
are a real estate office - using access for showing instructions - any help
would be great, I have trying to figure out what happened for 2 days. Yes I
am a newbie to how this works.

Is the name of your database (before you went on vacation) really db1.mdb?
Is/was your database secured?

During a failed compact, Access might leave a database named this behind.

Close Access, and open Windows Explorer (or My Computer if you prefer). Go
to the folder where your database is stored. If you see a file with a 'ldb'
extension, delete the file. What mdb files do you see? Try opening your
database and then use Tools, Database Utilities, Compact and Repair.

More details needed in order to help further.

Thanks Joan for trying to help me...I certainly need it. Everything was set
up a few years ago using the Access 2000 by someone else, then other Computer
EXPERT(?) Installed Access 2003. For the last four years we have used the
Access 2000, because the Access 2003 was not installed properly or so I
think, because there was some of the database was on 2003 and some on 2000.
No one seemed to know how to take care of this, so I kept using the 2000.
Everything was working great until recently.

When I open Access a window comes up [microsoft office access cannot open
C:\Access Data\DBfile\db1_backup.mdb due to security restrictions. Security
setting restricts access to the file because it is not digitally signed] I
cannot open my original data base.
Folder Name reads: DBfile
Properties: db1
Location: C:\Access Data\DBfile
Under Tools - Security (Users & Group Accts) Name: Admin, Avail Grps:
Admins, Users. Member of: Admins, Users / Groups- Name: Admins
Workgroup Admin - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.YOUR -
8120BE3D9C\Application Data \ Microsoft\ Access\System.mdw
***I have never had to do anything to it, that is why I am ignorant to all
of this, but I do want to learn.

By the look of your information, your database is not secured, so let's
ignore that.

There should be (have been) no problem using 2003/2002/2000 against a 2000
version mdb.

db1_backup.mdb - that looks like a name Access would give it when it had to
shutdown due to some error/corruption - it would create a backup of the
file.

Is that the exact error message you are getting? You could try to open
Access and go to Macro, Security and set it to low and then try to open the
database (if that item is missing from the Macro menu, then reset your
menubar).
