My recollection is that the design master has to have a permanent location
and not move. Something about how replicas and masters identify and keep
track of each other internally. I seem to recall that, by design, a master
can't be on removable media: even if it seems (to you) to have the same
address each time you plug it in, it will internally be recognized as a
"new" db reference that has never been synced to.
Note that *ALL* of the above are very, very hazy "factoids", so don't rely
on them as gospel. But perhaps it will point you in a fruitful direction.
