Our Laptop has recently started having problems with the AC power adapter.
If the Laptop is started with AC power applied all is ok. If the AC power is
turned off while the computer is on, it runs okay on the battery and it boots
up and runs ok on the battery. But if while it's running the AC power supply
is disconected and then plugged in again, or if it's started on the battery
and then the AC power is connected, it won't accept AC power and just keeps
flashing the screen while the battery gradually runs down. If the machine is
re-booted while this flashing is going on and the AC adaper is left plugged
in, it accepts AC power okay during the re-boot. We're running XP
Professional (SP2) on the Laptop.

Does anyone have any idea what's gone wrong and how I might fix it?

The problem is likely on the motherboard, and you fix it by taking it for
service. Unfortunately, you may find that the service requires
motherboard replacement, and is unreasonably expensive.

In that case, you might decide to just take the problem into account when
using the laptop and leave it as is.

The OS has no bearing on this. It's a hardware problem that can't be fixed
by software.

Perhaps a call to a computer shop might help? You see, your problem
is a problem with your HARDWARE and has nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING,
to do with the XP OS.

Thanks for the response, but I'm not convinced the problem is just hardware.
Maybe I didn't explain the problem well enough before, but, basically, if
Windows XP is NOT running I don't get the problem. So, for example, if the
AC adapter is plugged in before I boot up, AC power is supplied to the
computer and continues being supplied after boot-up. But, if the AC power is
disconnected while Windows is running it won't re-connect until Windows is
shut down. So I still think it is something to do with Windows - maybe the
MS AC adapter driver? I can see it in Device Manager, but I can't do
anything about modifying or updating it.

Any furthre thoughts?

Check the manufacturer's web page and download the latest drivers for your
motherboard chipset...

I would try one of the live Linux cds (Knoppix, Ubuntu, etc) and see if the
problem persists. If it does, it is probably hardware. Also, you might try
right clicking in the device manage and "scan for hardware changes" after
plugging in the ac.
