Ok Guys, I'm still not able to get the two sets of memory (see below) to work together. Can ne1 tell me
if they should/shouldn't work together? when I put the two 512mb sticks in A1 and B1 and the 256mb
sticks in A2 and B2 I only get 512mb's of ram showing up instead of 1.5gb. The same thing happens if
I reverse the sticks...smaller sticks in A1 and B1. I've used all different BIOS versions upto 1006. Any help
here would be appreaciate. Thanks all. Ed

So, you've tested the pairs of sticks separately, and they report
512MB dual channel and 1GB dual channel ?

About the only algorithm I can suggest, is install the slow memory
first, in A1 and B1. Enter the BIOS and set the memory timings
manually (2.5-3-3-8 according to one report). Using that slow
timing should also suit the faster memory you will be adding
later. Set Command Rate to 2T (in preparation for operation of
four sticks at DDR400). Set Vdimm voltage to a value between
say 2.6V and 2.75V (unless the memory packaging of all DIMMs
says they can take more than that). Save and exit.

Boot and test the memory (memtest86+ from memtest.org). Just a
quick one pass, to verify no stuck bits in the memory.
Now, shut down and unplug the computer. (With memtest86, hit
<esc>, then hit the power switch.) Install the second set of
sticks. The manual timings used in the first step, should still
be good enough to make it work. See if it boots now.

The Asus manual contains the disturbing phrase "always install
DIMMs with the same CAS latency". I hope they are referring to
a matched pair installed in Ax and Bx, as opposed to insisting that
all four sticks have matching CAS. A decent BIOS should be able
to calculate the slowest timing of all the sticks, and use that
timing to set up the memory controller.

Have you checked your voltages ?
With a defective PSU voltage can be too low to
support more than one stick.

Unlikely, but..

It happened here.
