In my current setup I have the following gear:

* Asus A7V8X-X (BIOS version 1009).
* AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Thoroughbred, Model 8, 2083Mhz, 333Mhz FSB, 256Kb
L2).

According to Asus' website, my motherboard will support (up to):
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (Barton, Model 10, 2166Mhz, 333Mhz FSB, 512Kb L2).

FWIW I am not comtemplating the Semprons at this time.

My question is: Is the increase of 83Mhz in the clock speed, increase of
256Kb in the L2 and newer Barton core enough to warrant upgrading to the
3000+ processor?

holdoff for a while and save ya dosh.

100% is IMHO minimum.
50% or less will leave you dissapointed in minutes with "why did I bother".
20% or less and you will be hard pushed to notice any difference.

Personally, there is only 1 option. get a new amd64 say 3.2ghz 939 pin chip
and mobo with nforce4. Then later when dual core comes out, upgrade the cpu.
Note: requires s/w that will benefit from duals. There is some risk in this:
that current mobos may not support dual core.

cpu and replace it with an XP-M 2500+ and overclock it to 3200+. I have a
few of the a7n8x-x boards and theyre excellent for such - they do it so
effortlessly with complete stability. So if youre that way inclined, save
your money. XP3000+? No reason to.

I have that exact mobo with an XP-M 2400+ 35 watt processor and I'm running
FSB 205, 2363 MHZ.
I've had it up to FSB 209, 2403 MHZ, but backed off a little just to play it
a little safer.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.
I have decided not to spend the money on upgrading to the 3000+, and will
instead save up to upgrade to an AMD based 939pin 64bit solution instead.
