I was wondering, can i use the promise SATA RAID controller on my a7v8x as a
normal SATA controller? I want to connect one or two SATA drives, without
setting them up as RAID 0 or 1.

/Peter

You can do that without problems.

I wonder if anybody has come across a RAID controller that does not allow
the use of single or multiple drives in a non-RAID configuration?

I'm not just a number. To many, I'm known as a String...

I don't think you need another controller to do this.
Attach both to the mb and then define two striped arrays of a single drive
each; in normal operating a single drive is defined as a striped array of
one drive only.
