My A7V880 reports 'Bad BIOS Checksum, Starting BIOS Recovery' but this only
seems to happen if rebooted, normal shutdown works ok.

This machine has been flashed to 1009 using the ASUS Update utility from
within XP (SP2).

Anyone else encountered this?

I have one of these but it doesn't behave like that. Although I did
flash it from floppy but I wouldn't have thought it would make any
difference in all honesty. Could well be your XP isn't shutting down
properly and thus rebooting too soon.
