A7N8X Sound Problems

I've just lost the sound on my A7N8X deluxe rev.2.0 - I'm told from the
multimedia icon in control panel that "driver is enabled but inactive due to
an unknown problem"
I've got the latest bios and drivers and all my attempts to rectify this
problem have no effect.
I've unistalled/reinstalled, I even reinstalled the OS (win98se) all to no
effect.
I have an option on my modem/answer phone to replay messages through the
modem and that works but not through the PC itself.
Any help/clues/pointers would be welcomed.
