If the product has Voice POST, you should be able to plug an amplified
speaker, your stereo, or 32 ohm headphones, into the lime colored audio
jack on the back of the computer. Compare any message it gives you at POST,
to the table of Voice POST messages listed in the manual. The
message will be pretty garbled, due to compression techniques used
for the voice samples, but you may be able to figure it out by looking
at the table of messages.
You need the two jumpers to be installed on the FPAUDIO header, for
the line out on the back of the computer to work. They should have been
on that 2x5 header when you got the motherboard. (See item #11 in the
manual, for a picture of where to put the jumpers.) Also, check that
the green +5VSB (standby) power LED on the motherboard is illuminated
when the power supply switch is set to the ON position on the back
of the computer. If +5VSB is available to the Voice POST, and a
reset signal is being properly generated, the Voice POST chip should
be able to talk to you, even if processor and memory are not installed
on the board. The Voice chip can work all by itself, with no help
from other chips on the board. As long as it sees the reset event...
If you cannot get the fans to spin, there must be a power problem of
some sort. If the fans spin, then listen for the Voice POST message.
I haven't run into anyone doing this lately, but check that you don't
have any extra brass standoffs underneath the motherboard. A standoff
should only be placed under each of those plated holes on the
motherboard. Otherwise, a brass standoff can short to a bare copper
conductor on the bottom of the board. This happens often enough,
that when Asus tech support is told there is no audio on an A7N8X,
they can tell you exactly where you incorrectly put the standoff :-)
