A7N8X-E Deluxe FSB problems

Just got hold of A7N8X-E Deluxe and 1GB GEIL PC3500 but am having
problems getting the FSB to work over 200Mhz. The CPU im using is a
XP2400+ (Tbred-B) which is known to be able to clock reliably to about
2250.

The maximum FSB in which the machine will boot windows is 202Mhz except
strangely enough it will boot at 210Mhz if the multiplier is set at 9.5
or lower. Trying any higher multiplier (ie 10x or 10.5) gives me either
a black screen (and the "system failed due to CPU over clocking" voice
message) or the post screen frozen (with occasionally the floppy drive
seeking over and over).

Why if the CPU will run fine @ 2222Mhz (11x202) and work fine at 9.5x210
cant I get it running @2205MHz (10.5x210) which would be the ideal
speed.

It doesnt appear to be the memory as trying the FSB over 202 but the
memory running slower still results in the frozen/blank POST screens,
also I've tried running the RAM at upto 2.8v and relaxing timings to
extremely slack levels too and it makes no difference.

Also tried BIOS versions 1006, 1007 and 1008 and again no difference.

One other thing is occasionally during one of these failed boots the CPU
is identified as an XP1800+ instead of a XP2400+, is this a perhaps a
pointer to the CPU hving a fault or is it likely just to be motherboard
getting confused?

Any ideas on how I may be able to get it running how I want? (full specs
below).

AthlonXP 2400+ (unlocked Tred-B)
1GB GEIL Ultra PC3500 "Golden Dragon"
A7N8X-E (BIOS 1006/1007/1008)
Crucial Radeon 9800Pro

Have you increased the Vcore?

Yes, I have tried all the vcore settings to 1.85v (the CPU in question
needs 1.75v), but I dont think its a core voltage problem because the
system will run faster (2222 at 11x202) than the (2205 at 10.5x210 which
I'm aiming for).

Ok. I see that you tried increasing the memory voltage, too. The
reason it comes up as an 1800+ when the overclock fails is that the FSB
defaults to 100 Mhz and 15 X 100 MHz FSB is 1500 MHz, which is a
XP1800+.

Can't think of anything else to try, unfortunately. I have a XP1700+
running at 2200 MHz with a 220 Mhz FSB on a NF7-S here. Sounds like a
MB problem. Maybe try the ASUS NG:
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus

Good luck and happy holidays.
Rob

I see that you cross posted to the Asus NG. I must learn to be more
observant

- 3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600
non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory
- Dual Channel Memory Architecture

the motherboard doesn't support 3500.

Hi, Mac. I've been told on this ng that the same mobo, exc. in the
non-deluxe version that I have, will run great on Kingston HyperX PC3500.
Actually, I bo't a stick, 512, but was shipped PC3200 by mistake. Have
returned it via rma requesting PC3500 be sent rather than refund. Will be
interesting to see. I'm hoping I was advised correctly!! sdlomi

Why don't you just get an XP that runs closer to that speed.

What fun is that?
