A7N266-VM problems

First of all I am running Windows 98 which has been upgraded to SE I guess
via updates at microsoft.com.

My computer was pre-installed and I only added a CDROM & CDRW. The problem I
am having is...

My puter boots up fine the only thing that never works is the sound and
ethernet. My puter problem is drivers won't load the device driver (NDIS.VXD
& NTKERN.VXD) for the sound. And (NDIS.vxd) for the MCP MAC ethernet. This
PC was pre-installed for me and I installed a PCI sound card and an external
ethernet adapter so the whole damn thing works now anyway. But I would like
to get the onboard sound and ethernet to work.

I build computers both PC and Apple computers. This is the worse case
scenario I've ever seen for a motherboard. I guess I should have stuck with
Intel. I also noticed that nVidia support really sucks. Since they can't
even answer someones question straight forward and can't seem to make a
software installer that works (yes I am ****ed). I've looked everywhere
almost on the internet to get my questions answered and it seems everyone
else is having the same problem as me.

The support CD that came with the computer/motherboard that has the software
installer (nVidia Drivers) does not work. I found one that does work which
is version 2.41. The display drivers work fine with no problems. The sound
and ethernet don't work as mentioned above. Do I need Windows XP to get the
sound and ethernet to work?

I've upgraded from an Intel VC820 Pentium II 450MHz to a 2GHz ASUS and
doesn't seem to be as fast as I thought it would be. Below are my computer
specs...

AMD Athlon 2400+
20GB Seagate HDD
128mb PC2100 SDRAM (currently)
24X Compaq CDROM
4x4x16 Yamaha CDR/CDRW
Mitsumi 1440k Floppy drive
Cirrus 64bit PCI sound card
Farralon USB to Ethernet adapter
all in a cheap generic computer case.

I would appreciate your feedback.

That MB works great for me under WinXP. Never had an issue with any of the
onboard features. I always ignored the CD that came with it and simply used
the nVidia nForce Drivers from nVidia's web site.

I doubt that, '98SE is different from '98

You make it sound as though it was delivered without sound and LAN
capability, are you sure they're not disabled?

The manual is VERY SPECIFIC about installing drivers under '98.
They have to be installed MANUALLY. Read chapter 5 of the manual carefully,
particularly 5.3.3 (in manual version E1014).

XP *is* the recommended OS for that board.
I built my daughter's, running XP Pro, and I *still* had to install some
driver software manually. She now has 6 channel Dolby Digital sound, full
configuration control over the sound jacks at the rear of the PC (not that
she bothers with them). I reckon it's a very nice "budget" board.
Have a read 'o that manual again.

I'm running a 2400+ on that board with no probs under XP home.

Its worth noting you have a fair bit plugged into it, odds are you have a
cheap generic Power Supply (that came with the case), if you can borrow a
quality power supply it might be worth trying, or disconnect everything
except the HDD and CD - if it works then, you know your Power supply is not
up to the job.

You have, of course, checked that ethernet and sound are both enabled in
the BIOS. Right?

And that the N-Force drivers have been installed MANUALLY, as per page 70
of the manual (mine's E1014)
