98SE to XP Question: Multiple Drives

Hello To The List,

I'm about to upgrade from 98SE to XP (clean install).

I have a boatload of archive files on my second hard drive.

Question: Can I do the clean install on my C drive and still keep my
existing archives on my D drive as they are right now, and not have a file
system conflict, or do I need to burn all my archives onto disk and wipe
both drives to have XP operate correctly?

I was not sure if XP would be able to open/recognize the archives in their
present state, as they are written with the FAT system, and XP of course
using the NTFS.

I apologize for what may be such a simple question, but I like doing my
homework before undertaking such a major task (one which I want to be
trouble-free as possible).

Thank you very much for any help you may throw my way.

Much Respect,

Genghis

Clean install on C drive will not affect D drive in any way at all.
Install away and have fun.

The clean install shouldn't touch the other drive. However, I've known
people who have mistakenly installed and/or formatted the wrong drive. If
you're not sure you know exactly what you're doing, it wouldn't hurt to
unplug the other drive when you do the install.

Wojo and D. Currie,

Thank you very much for the quick replies.

Wojo- I couldn't readily find that information and appreciate you taking
the time to reply. My plan is now to do the clean install on C drive, get
xp up and running, then transfer the archives on D drive temporarily to C
and reformat D using NTFS then re-transferring the archives back to D. I
was thinking that this way, both drives are now NTFS. Agree or disagree as
to being a good idea?

D. Currie- Thanks for the heads up. That (reformatting the wrong drive)
would be sickening. That being said, I'm not as dumb as I look! ;-) I
appreciate your taking the time to reply.

Thanks again.

Much Respect,

Genghis

Most often the people who do that sort of thing are people who've done it a
number of times and are confident. People who haven't done it before (or
often) tend to read every bit of the directions, and are very careful to
follow along. The confident ones tend to move so fast that if a program has
changed a bit, they might whiz past the answers to which is the source drive
and which is the destination drive without really reading because they know
the keystrokes.

I hear what you're saying. I, too, am guilty of the above a couple of
times, for sure. With something as important as this, though, I'll make
sure I'm cautious.

Again, thanks for the reply and info.

Much Respect,

Genghis

Oh I'm sure we're all guilty of that one on occasion.
