My 9800 pro seems to have a power issue. Every so often it (the card) makes
a clicking noise and the picture flickers. I assume this may be a power
problem. I have a 550W PSU.
Any ideas on how to test or solve?

Overclock it and see if it gets worse (card draws more power and increases the noise the PSU has to
absorb).
Underclock and see if it gets better (card draws less power, decreases the noise)

Also, can you recreate the clicking noise and flicker by changing screen resolution via the display
properties? Might be that the card is actually resetting itself (changing resolution approximates
this, which is why I ask).

Changing res via the display props does not seem to make the noise. Not
sure on o/c and u/c any advice?

It sounds more like a high voltage problem with your monitor.

I get the same symptoms when dust builds up inside it.

It causes a small shortcurcuit that allows the high voltage to "jump" and
disturbs the image on the monitor. The spark produces the clicking sound.

When I blow into the back of the monitor, the problem goes away.

But beware, if the "dust busting" doesn't help, it could also be a
developing fault in the high voltage circuit in your monitor.

I have now noticed that my monitor now flickers on one side of the screen.
Is there anyway to test it to see if the monitor is faulty?

Well, there shouldn't be much high voltage in a TFT monitor :-)
That's only in CRT's.. (And that's what I have :-) )

Ok, then:
I would try to locate the clicking sound exactly: Is it from the monitor,
from the card, or somewhere else? That could tell where to look.

I would also try the cable, try to reseat it, and perhaps twist it a bit at
both ends to see if there's a loose connection.

Perhaps I would even try to reseat the card on the MB, to see if it was
loose in its socket.

I would also try another monitor, and/or try the monitor on another PC.

I still mostly suspect the monitor, but it _could_ always be something else.
Problems are tricky to find the source of, sometimes :-)

(If you read my post from several days ago, you will see that I had a card
act like it was bad, because a fan was connected on its powercord..)

So as long as the particular cord from the power pack only connects to the
video card, it should not have a power issue? Thats the way I understand
it. i shall open up, reseat, check cables and listen for noises. Will
report again tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Hey you could try aida32 there is some test to do with that... check
it out...
