I've decided I'm not going to chance frying my 9800 Pro. I've already seen some
overheating problems (on the first day the ambient temp got above 80 degrees
farenheit). What are some good, bolt-on, alternative heatsink solutions for the
9800 Pro?

What would happen if I were to remove the shim and (using arctic silver
adhesive) directly attach the heatsink to the die? Would that improve the
cooling? Is it too risky?

I've got a Zalman ZM80C with the ZM01 optional fan on my Hercules 9800 Pro.
Very quiet, but not sure about the temps - I've had no problems mind. I
assume this hulking beast is a little more effective than the stock cooler.

Removing the shim will improve the stock cooler
significantly, especially if you take the time to
lap the stock heatsink smooth before reapplying it.
The stock HSF are pretty rough finished. Be very
careful cleaning the gunk off the core, those little
bits of flyshit on top of the VPU are passive
components, so don't be rippin them off (insulate with
a thin layer of gel type super glue if observed to
be anywhere close to contacting the thermal plate
with the shim removed).

Be very careful when crimping the side 2 ends of the
mounting post grippers shut when taking the HSF off.
(I suggest fine serrated/crosshatched needle nose pliers)
Its easy to damage them, in which case your HSF might
fall off onto the card below sometime (mine did once,
before I super glued the post ends - *one half drop please*).

The risk is no more than installing an Arctic Cool
VGA Cooler which is one of several add on solutions,
but the one I happen to prefer due to its external exhaust
and two speed fan.
